How Does an AC Recharge Work?

Want to learn how to recharge a car air conditioning system on your own? We’ve outlined the basic steps below. All you need is to pick up some refrigerant from our parts department, and then get started:

  • Check Temperature: You can only recharge your AC system under the proper conditions. Generally speaking, if the ambient temperature is 55°F or below, you’ll need to wait. But, check your refrigerant packaging to be sure.
  • Protect Yourself: Put on safety glasses and gloves to keep yourself safe as you work.
  • Locate the Service Port: Look for the smaller low-side service port by the accumulator and compressor and the larger high-side fitting by the compressor and condenser. Use the low-side port for a can of refrigerant or both ports if using a set of gauges.
  • Clean the Area: Wipe away dust and debris from the area with a clean rag and remove the cap.
  • Attach Hose: Attach the hose. It should secure easily, and if not, make sure you’re using the correct port.
  • Add Refrigerant: Read and follow the instructions on the refrigerant package to top it off.
  • Charge System: Charge the system, taking note of the pressure readings as you go. The compressor clutch will likely engage and disengage as you charge, but it will eventually stabilize. Do not overcharge or you could damage your vehicle permanently.
  • Remove Hose: Remove the hose and store extra refrigerant in a dry and cool location.
  • Check the Port Cap: Before you finish up, look at the seal beneath your port cap. Look for any cracks or tears. If everything looks fine, replace the cap, and you’re good to go!
